With the splash of free agency and the draft drying up in the soon-to-be summer sun, it’s normal for sports writers to look back on what could have been in their team’s history had things gone just a little different. One such writer, Pat Lane, from Mile High Report’ssister site, Pats Pulpit, scanned the spartan history of injustices against his team and somehow settled on one of the greatest plays in Champ Bailey’s career, the 99-yard non-scoring interception during the divisional round of the 2005 playoffs. You may review the article, here. One of the worst in NFL history? Ramifications? Come on Pat. You know better than that. Even over here in Broncos Country, we all know what the worst call in NFL history was and it pains us to say it.Just don’t tell Raiders fans we agree with them.Pat’s description of the play is entirely accurate. Tom Brady tossed an interception to Champ Bailey in the red zone and Champ ran it all the way back and had the ball knocked out of his hand at the 1-yard line. The refs called it as they saw it and the rest is history. Then Bill Belichick had the play reviewed.Being 2005, there was no pylon cam, no sideline cam, no other angles that definitively showed the ball’s location once it was knocked from 2019 Hall of Fame inductee Champ Bailey’s hands. Pat says it himself, there just isn’t a conclusive picture. Pat then goes full Zapruder Dalton Risner Jersey 2019 , breaking down the end of the play. He carefully documents the location of the ball while completely discounting the angle of the shots. None of the photos adequately depict the ball or the goal line in relation to the sideline and goal line. The photos were taken from the roving camera-mobile thing, likely around the Patriots 15-yard line. It’s hardly an angle where a single yard can be adequately judged. For better or worse, without clear photographic evidence, which the video wasn’t then and the photos aren’t now, deference must be given to the refs on the field and their verdict still holds true to this day.Like in 2013 and 2015, the 2005 Patriots were no match for the Denver Broncos. Despite their tremendous success (free of controversy, scandal, and consternation), it’s interesting to see them return to one of their worst post-season losses and wonder what could have been. I know the Patriots and their fans love to create narratives where they are somehow the underdog to rally support for their team as though theirs isn’t one of the most impressive sports dynasties in sports history, but is this really the best hill on which to plant that narrative? Despite all the photos... CHAMP BAILEY IS STILL THERE... You know, out at the 1-yard line. If we’re breaking down tragedies on video, I suggest Pat look at this incredibly creepy mattress commercial that airs locally in New England. What is up with this nightmare? What’s with the turtleneck? What’s with the elongated stares? Why establish opulence only to reveal a jail cell-like room with no windows? I hold the other fellow in the commercial as complicit in whatever nefarious acts (crimes?) Tom is about to commit on this spartan and likely overpriced mattress set. “Can I get you anything?” Yeah, dude, how about a damn pillow?! Los Angeles selected him out of Memphis in the third round. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — New Broncos coach Vic Fangio isn’t just bringing his defensive philosophies from Chicago. He plucked outside linebackers coach Brandon Staley off the Bears‘ staff for a similar role in Denver, and then brought secondary coach Ed Donatell over to serve as his defensive coordinator.Donatell has spent the last four seasons as the Bears’ defensive backs coach, coinciding with Fangio’s stint as Chicago’s defensive coordinator before his hiring in Denver last week. He spent the four seasons before that doing the same for Fangio in San Francisco.A former defensive coordinator in Green Bay and Atlanta, Donatell has twice coached the secondary in Denver, first for Mike Shanahan from 1995 to 1999 and again for Josh McDaniels in 2000.“Ed’s been an integral part of top-10 defenses for six of the last eight seasons in two different places, and he’s a great fit to be our defensive coordinator Von Miller Jersey ,” Fangio said Tuesday night. “Having worked very closely with him for a number of years, Ed has a strong understanding of the entire defense from the front end to the back end with the defensive backs being his specialty.“He’s a very good teacher and believes in the fundamentals in the classroom and on the field.”Fangio, however, will make the defensive play calls himself.“They hired me because of my work on the defensive side of the ball. I’m going to give them my work on the defensive side of the ball,” Fangio said last week. “I believe, for the most part, I’m pretty good at it.”Fangio also was interviewing 49ers QBs coach Rich Scangarello on Tuesday about his offensive coordinator job after rebuffing Gary Kubiak , who joined the Minnesota Vikings as an assistant head coach and offensive adviser Monday.Scangarello (scain-guh-REL-oh) would seem a good fit for an offense that general manager John Elway declared needs to modernize to keep up with teams around the NFL who are all-in on the run-pass option, among other innovations.Staley, 36, goes from having Khalil Mack as his prized pupil to tutoring Broncos star Von Miller .Mack had 12 1/2 sacks and six forced fumbles in helping the Bears (12-5) qualify for the playoffs for the first time in eight years despite missing all of training camp before the Raiders traded him to Chicago just before opening weekend.Miller posted 14 1/2 sacks last year and teamed with rookie Bradley Chubb (12 sacks) to form the NFL’s most potent pass-rushing duo. Fangio and Elway have said they believe Miller can get even better.Playing with a lead would go a long way in that quest. The Broncos (6-10) were awful under offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave last year, punting on their opening drive in each of their last nine games.Neither Musgrave nor defensive coordinator Joe Woods will return in 2019. Special teams coordinator Tom McMahon is expected to have the same role when Fangio finalizes his coaching staff. The Broncos didn’t technically have an outside linebackers coach last year despite having three first-round picks at the position in Miller, Chubb and Shane Ray. Former Cowboys and Broncos star DeMarcus Ware was a volunteer coach for the edge rushers but he missed long stretches of the season while competing on “Dances with the Stars” last fall.
